Nick Castle put on a spray-painted William Shatner mask in 1978 and became the most imitated figure in horror. He was a film student friend of John Carpenter’s, hired cheap, and the walk he gave The Shape is the reason Michael Myers still reads as unnatural rather than just menacing. He went on to co-write Escape from New York and direct The Last Starfighter, then returned to the mask for the 2018 Halloween.
